Drag Queen Gala Maspalomas Carnaval in the Yumbo Center Centrum 2011
There are many different competitions in the Maspalomas Carnaval ( we are using the Spanish spelling of the word carnaval).

Two of the bigger competitions sound a little similar and, the Queen of the carnaval and the Drag Queen of the Carnaval, but they are quite different.

They both involve spectacular costumes but the rules and competitors are different. The Queen of the carnaval is for women only and involves costumes that may weight up to 100Kg.
Typically their costumes have frames with small wheels and the girls effectively push or drag the whole thing along.

The Drag Queen of the Carnaval is a competition for men, but they are quite different from the British German or American drag queens, they are more show biz, they dance, sing and wear some fantasy or whacky costumes. ,

Thousands lined the streets for the afternoon parade called the Planet Maspalomas cabalgata or street parade as we call it in English.
There is a strong tradition to dress up in some form of costume, anything goes!

The 2013 Maspalomas promotional Video was for the Planet Maspalomas theme adopted this year.
